The Closest Thing to Flying Activity Packs
February marks the launch of The Closest Thing to Flying by award-winning author Gill Lewis. When Semira discovers a diary written by Hen, a girl living over 100 years ago, she finds the friend she has been desperately seeking. A friend who brings not just comfort, but inspiration to be brave, to fight for her place in the world, and maybe even to uncover the secrets of her own past...
Set against a backdrop of issues including the plight of refugees in the UK, the origins of the RSPB, and women’s suffrage, this is an uplifting story of fighting for what you believe in.
Oxford Children’s Books are providing materials to create stunning displays and activity packs to make children’s imaginations take flight! Oxford Children’s Books are offering 150 free packs for libraries including:
- 2 x The Closest Thing to Flying posters
- 10 x The Closest Thing to Flying postcards
- 20 x Activity sheets around the themes of suffrage, the RSPB and refugees
- Downloadable reading notes
You can order these until 11 January (but they may sell out before this date).
This is strictly one pack per public library. If you are ordering packs for more than one library please do email Kimberley.Sheehan@readingagency.org.uk to let her know the names of the individual libraries. Alternatively, you could order the individual orders on Shopify.
If you order a pack you are agreeing to use the materials within your library and to share photos of the group (these do not need to include children's faces) using them on social media using @OUPChildrens and @readingagency. You will also send feedback of how you used the provided materials by 18 March. Please do not order the pack if you cannot commit to this.
The publisher will be dispatching your resources. They will receive a dispatch list with your contact name and work address (which you give) for delivery. They will only deliver the pack requested and the dispatch list will then be deleted after the packs have been sent.
