Support for Reading in Prisons

The Reading Agency has developed a new approach to help prisons deliver the transformative power of a high-quality reading offer as required by HMIP/Ofsted recommendations. Our programme bundle will give prisoners:

'...the chance to develop crucial literacy skills, expand their knowledge and find pleasure in learning. Equipping prisoners with reading skills allows them to embark on a path towards rehabilitation and reintegration into society.' - HMIP/Ofsted

Who are we?

We are a UK charity with a mission to empower people of all ages to read. We have a longstanding relationship with prisons and work closely with prison libraries and education teams to deliver the proven power of reading.

Our new prison reading model provides targeted and effective support for prisoners at all stages of their reading journey, ensuring that individual reading needs are met with authentic tools co-produced with the prison community.

What can we provide?

  • Programmes designed to develop reading confidence, support skills and learning and promote wellbeing.
  • Activity relevant to emergent readers, readers with specific needs and with English as a second language, as well as more confident readers further along on their reading journey.
  • Resources to support 'purposeful activity' that can promote 'reading for pleasure and purpose [...] throughout the prison', meeting the objectives of HMIP/Ofsted recommendation for reading education.

Individual programme costs are detailed below. We are offering multi-programme discounts including:

  • 10% discount on the purchase of materials for two programmes
  • 15% discount on the purchase of materials for three programmes
  • 20% discount on the purchase of materials for four or more programmes

Please note that Quick Reads 2025 will also be available to purchase as part of the prison bundle discount. We'll update this page when we go live.

Please get in touch with shop@readingagency.org.uk if you'd like to place an multi-programme order.
